Rose-engine’s official SIGNALIS description presents survival horror in a dystopian future, following the technician Replika Elster. It pairs a cosmic mystery with her search for lost dreams. The premise offers a large unknown and a personal reason to approach it.
Understanding is not the only form of interest
A mystery can attract us because we want an explanation. It can also attract us because we care about what the search means to the person making it. Separate those motivations without treating them as rivals. A detail may matter as evidence, as an expression of longing, or as both. Keeping those possibilities open can change the questions you bring to a story.
Recognise the kind of answer you want
Consider whether you most enjoy arranging a coherent explanation or following a character through uncertainty. You may want both, but not in equal measure. That preference can help you read a premise without demanding that every mystery serve the same purpose.
