Work in an unfamiliar environment
Ghost Ship Games describes Deep Rock Galactic as a cooperative first-person game for one to four players, combining cave exploration, mineral extraction and survival against alien creatures. Its official framing places a shared task within an environment that needs to be explored. The team has something to do as well as somewhere to go.
Notice the work around the objective
Distinguish doing a task near other people from actively cooperating with them. Helping may involve communicating an intention, noticing that someone is behind or making space for a less experienced partner to understand the situation. A shared objective can provide direction without automatically establishing shared expectations.
Agree on what a useful session means
Before playing together, consider whether the group values speed, experimentation or a chance to learn. You can change that agreement, but naming it makes cooperation less dependent on guessing.
