Build something that keeps working

Wube describes Factorio as a game about creating automated factories that produce increasingly complex items. Simple elements combine into larger structures, while the factory also needs protection. The premise places the process of production at the centre of play, rather than treating it as invisible work behind an outcome.

From doing to arranging

There is a difference between completing a task yourself and arranging conditions in which it can be repeated. Automation shifts attention from the individual action to the relationships between actions. The attraction may be noticing a dependency, revising a layout or understanding why a system behaves as it does.

Consider whether revision is the reward

Think about what you enjoy when a plan does not quite work. Do you want to finish and move on, or does the prospect of reorganising it create a new reason to stay? The attraction of a factory may be the next revision as much as the finished machine.
