Enter a world with a past
Team Cherry describes Hollow Knight as an action adventure through a ruined kingdom of insects and heroes. Twisting caverns, creatures and hand-drawn environments establish a place that already has a history. You arrive after something has happened, rather than at the beginning of everything.
Let the setting ask a question
A ruin gives the imagination work to do. A structure can suggest a purpose even when that purpose is no longer obvious. Curiosity can grow from wondering why a space exists, not only from wondering where it leads.
Notice before you explain
When approaching a world framed by loss, try naming one detail that interests you before looking for its definitive meaning. Keeping an observation separate from an explanation leaves room to change your mind. If you prefer a setting that states its purpose immediately, that preference is useful too.
