A future that can diverge
Quantic Dream’s description of Detroit: Become Human places human and android destinies within a branching narrative shaped by the player’s choices. Branching is the structural promise. It tells us that outcomes can differ, but it does not tell us which decision will matter most to an individual player.
Possibility is not significance
The number of routes is only one way to think about agency. A decision may feel personal because you hesitate before making it, or because you choose to accept the result. Another player may prefer to revisit a moment and compare alternatives. These are different relationships with a story, not a hierarchy of correct ways to play.
Consider your relationship with revision
Ask yourself whether you want to discover one version of a story or investigate how it can change. This can help you distinguish interest in narrative possibility from a desire to see everything. A branching premise should invite a question about your preferences, rather than become a numerical measure of quality.
