A role before a solution
ZA/UM presents Disco Elysium as a role-playing detective game, with a distinctive skill system and different ways to approach the people you question. That description offers two possible attractions: solving a case and inhabiting a particular kind of investigator. They are related, but they need not be the same reason to play.
Choose a point of view
A detective story invites you to ask what happened; role-playing also invites you to ask who is doing the looking. Consider whether you want to make the decision you personally prefer or the decision that fits an imperfect character. The gap between those motives can be a source of interest rather than an error to correct.
Leave room for an imperfect answer
Before choosing a narrative game, think about your appetite for ambiguity. Do you enjoy finding the most efficient answer, or following a line of thought because it belongs to the role? The detective’s judgement can be as interesting as the case they are trying to solve.
